In a profound loss to the Sri Lankan tea industry, Merrill J. Fernando, the visionary founder of Dilmah Tea, breathed his last today (20) morning at the age of 93. Renowned for his passion, unwavering commitment to quality, and profound love for tea, Fernando leaves behind an enduring legacy as a trailblazing entrepreneur who transformed single-origin Ceylon tea into a global sensation.

Surrounded by loved ones, Merrill J. Fernando peacefully departed, leaving the world to celebrate his extraordinary journey and the empire he built under the esteemed Dilmah Brand. The Dilmah Family conveyed the heartfelt news through a tweet, assuring that his indomitable spirit would live on as he finds eternal rest in the embrace of his Lord.


Born in Negombo in 1930, Fernando’s remarkable ascent in the tea industry began in 1954 when he joined Arthur Frederick Jones & Co. as a Tea Assistant. His talent and dedication earned him the position of Managing Director, a role that eventually set him on the path to revolutionize the tea trade.

In the early 1970s, Merrill J. Fernando established Dilmah Tea, introducing the novel concept of single-origin Ceylon tea to the world. The bold move led to the expansion of Sri Lankan tea into over 100 countries, leaving an indelible mark on the global tea industry.

In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with prestigious titles and awards, including the “Global Businessman” at the Sri Lankan of the Year Awards in 2016 and the revered “Deshamanaya” title at the 2019 National Honours Ceremony.

Beyond his entrepreneurial achievements, Merrill J. Fernando will be remembered for his compassion and dedication in fostering a global family united by the cause he tirelessly championed for 73 years: Ceylon Tea with Taste, Goodness, and Ethical Purpose.

As the tea industry mourns the loss of a true icon, Merrill J. Fernando’s legacy will continue to inspire generations, and the spirit of Dilmah Tea will forever remain a symbol of his unwavering passion and commitment to the world of tea.
