A 57-year-old man lost his life after experiencing a severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic administered during his treatment, at the Kegalle Teaching Hospital. This comes shortly after the antibiotic was linked to the death of a 21-year-old girl at Peradeniya Hospital.
The incident took place on 10th when the man was admitted to the hospital due to abdominal distension and fever. Hospital Director, Dr. Mihiri Priyangani, disclosed that the patient had received 14 separate doses of the antibiotic, Ceftriaxone, as part of his treatment.
However, last Monday (17) the man developed an alarming allergic reaction to the antibiotic. As a result of his existing chronic health conditions, he was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite the medical team’s best efforts, the man passed away on Tuesday (18).
Dr. Priyangani explained that the patient’s pre-existing chronic illnesses complicated the matter, making it challenging to attribute the cause of death solely to the allergic reaction. Nonetheless, medical professionals suspect that the adverse reaction may have played a significant role in the tragic outcome.
Given the gravity of the situation, authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the precise cause of the man’s untimely demise.
