Stratford and Bow
Stratford and Bow is a constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament.
British authorities under their boundary review, formed Stratford and Bow seats in 2023. This was due to a significantly increased population of Newham. In the 2024 General election held last week Kumaran who contested from the Labour Party created history by becoming the first-ever Parliament representative of this constituency.
Sri Lankan parents migrated during the civil war
Kuamaran’s parents were Tamils from Sri Lanka who migrated around 40 years ago to the United Kingdom due to a civil war in Sri Lanka between LTTE and the government military. Her parents were assisted by Jeremy Corbyn one time Opposition Leader and the Former Leader of the Labour Party.
Kumaran joined politics with the Labour Party and contested two times for local elections but was unable to win. Without leaving politics she continued to work with politics and was appointed as the Deputy Director of Diplomatics of the KLabour Party Leader Keir Starmer. In this time she won the newly formed seat and became a member of the Parliament under Starmer’s premiership.
