Ravi Kumudesh, convenor of the Health Trade Union Alliance, has made a fervent plea to the Secretary of Health and the Director General of Health Services to remove Dr. Rukshan Bellana from his temporary position, citing his alleged unsuitability for medical administration and professional conduct.
Kumudesh’s statement follows a tumultuous incident at the Colombo National Hospital, where non-medical staff reportedly held Dr. Rukshan Bellana hostage in his room amidst a widespread protest. The incident occurred after Bellana was discharged from the hospital under police protection.
In response to inquiries by Lankasara, Kumudesh highlighted the Director General of Health Services’ alleged failure to address Bellana’s purported misconduct and divisive remarks. Despite support from various quarters, including the Government Medical Officers’ Association, Bellana’s conduct is criticized for lacking ethical standards.
Kumudesh warned of imminent action if their demands for Bellana’s removal are ignored, indicating that health staff are prepared to strike if necessary.
The controversy surrounding Bellana stems from his comments regarding unions advocating for DAT allowances. A video showcasing Bellana’s statements has sparked outrage among healthcare workers, further intensifying calls for his removal.
