The renowned Mihintala Raja Maha Vihara, a prominent center of Sri Lankan Buddhist heritage, has been cut off from electricity due to non-payment of outstanding bills.
The Electricity Board disconnected the power supply at around 12 noon today (03), following the accumulation of an arrears bill totaling Rupees Thirty-Four Lakhs, Forty-Eight Thousand, Three Hundred Sixty-Eight and Fourteen Cents (Rs. 34,48,368.14).
As a result of the power cut, concerns have been raised about the safety of the Mihintala Raja Maha Vihara site and its valuable archaeological heritage. The authorities of the temple have expressed their distress over the situation, noting that they are unable to pay such a substantial electricity bill.
Mihintala Rajamaha Vihara Viharaya’s Reverend Valavahangunavewe Dhammarathana Thero revealed that the outstanding electricity bill has been accumulating since the current government came into power.
