Hirunika Premachandra, the former Member of Parliament and Kaduwela Organizer of Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB), announced her resignation from the position of National Organizer of Samagi Vanita Balavega during a press conference in Colombo.
Premachandra cited deep disappointment as the primary reason for her decision, particularly in light of accusations made by a close associate of SJB leader Sajith Premadasa, claiming that constituency organizers had failed to effectively support their efforts in the recent presidential election. “I cannot continue in a role where my dedication and contributions are questioned,” she stated.
This announcement comes at a time when Premachandra is facing significant legal challenges. On June 28, 2024, she was convicted for her involvement in the 2015 abduction of a youth named Amila Priyankara, which was tied to a family dispute. The court sentenced her to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 for each of the 18 charges against her.
Following her conviction, Premachandra has filed an appeal and is seeking bail pending the outcome of her case, with a hearing scheduled for July 12. However, the Attorney General’s office has opposed her bail request, emphasizing the importance of accountability. If her appeal is unsuccessful, she could face a seven-year disqualification from holding public office.
Meanwhile, the SJB candidate for the Gampaha District in the upcoming general election Ajith Mannapperuma announced his resignation from all party positions yesterday. Additionally, the decision to exclude actress Damitha Abeyratne from the nomination list for the Ratnapura District has also generated considerable media attention.
As political dynamics shift within the SJB, the implications of these developments remain to be seen, particularly in light of Premachandra’s ongoing legal battles and the upcoming elections.
