Indika Udawatte, the District Return Officer and District Secretary of Kandy, announced that the district had reported the highest number of nomination rejections for the local government elections.
According to him, 230 groups submitted deposits for the Kandy District, while 210 political parties and independent groups submitted nominations. Out of these, 58 nominations were rejected.
Mr. Udawatte shared this information during a media briefing held today (21) at the Kandy District Secretariat. He stated that nominations from 52 recognized political parties and 6 independent groups were rejected. Only the nominations submitted for the Nawalapitiya Urban Council and the Medadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha were accepted without any rejections.
He further explained that 6 nominations were rejected in the Kandy Municipal Council — 4 from recognized political parties and 2 from independent groups. Additionally, 6 nominations were rejected in the Panwila Pradeshiya Sabha — 5 from recognized political parties and 1 from an independent group.
Nominations submitted to the Wattegama Urban Council, Kadugannawa Urban Council, Gampola Urban Council, and the following Pradeshiya Sabhas were also rejected: Thumpane, Harispattu, Akurana, Poojapitiya, Pathadumbara, Ududumbara, Minipe, Kundasale, Pathahewaheta, Gangawata Korala, Yatinuwara, Udunuwara, Udapalatha, Gangaihala Korala, and Pasbage Korala.
Mr. Udawatte also mentioned that the Kandy District has a total of 1,202,558 registered voters. For the Local Government Election, 937 polling stations across 368 polling divisions will be set up.
