The Indian Shipping Company made the decision to limit the Cheriyapani passenger ship service yesterday (15), which connects Nagapattinam in India and Kankasanture in Sri Lanka, to operate on three specific days each week.
Commencing from today (16), this passenger ship service will now run exclusively on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
This operational adjustment was implemented due to financial considerations. The shipping company aims to prevent losses by ensuring that each journey of this service carries at least 75 passengers.
To facilitate the convenience of passengers traveling to India via this ship, tickets are readily available at various locations in Jaffna. Furthermore, authorities have taken measures to expedite immigration and emigration services, as well as customs clearance.
The Cheriyapani shipping service has notably served as a primary choice for Jaffna-based businessmen. Since each passenger is permitted to carry up to 50 kg of cargo, there has been a noticeable increase in the transportation of goods between Jaffna and India, contributing to the economic activities in the region.
