The Department of Meteorology warns that several parts of the country are likely to experience heavy showers exceeding 100 mm today (10 December) as the Northeast monsoon continues to strengthen over Sri Lanka.

According to the forecast, Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, Southern and Uva provinces will receive showers or thundershowers at times throughout the day. The Met Department notes that the heaviest rainfall above 100 mm is expected in isolated locations in the Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces.

Fairly heavy showers of about 75 mm are also likely in some areas of the Central and Uva provinces, while other regions of the island may experience afternoon thundershowers, particularly after 1.00 p.m., with rainfall around 75 mm possible in certain spots.

The Department further cautions that fairly strong winds between 30–40 kmph can be expected at times across the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, the Trincomalee district and along the eastern slopes of the central hills.

Misty conditions are also forecast during the early morning hours in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimise the risk of damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
