Health professionals, mainly paramedical staff across the country have commenced a 24-hour token strike today in protest against the government’s proposed cuts to their allowances in the new budget. The strike, organized by the Federation of Health Professionals (FHP), began at 7:00 a.m. and will continue until tomorrow morning.
The trade union action follows failed discussions with the Ministry of Finance yesterday, where health sector representatives sought reconsideration of the planned reductions in allowances. The government has proposed lowering the current allowance rates from 1/20 and 1/160 to 1/30 and 1/200 in its maiden budget—sparking strong opposition from health professionals.
The Government Medical Laboratory Scientists’ Association (SLAGMLT) has pledged full support and participation in the strike.
Hospitals and health institutions nationwide are affected by the strike, except for specific institutions providing critical care. Maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, cancer hospitals, kidney hospitals, and the National Institute of Mental Health will continue to function as usual.
The Federation warned that any attempts by authorities to disrupt the strike could lead to the immediate withdrawal of staff from life-saving, emergency, and essential services. However, during the strike, essential services will continue voluntarily without attendance being recorded or allowances being claimed.
Health professionals urge heads of institutions to support the voluntary continuation of emergency services during the strike action.
