Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe, who passed away on August 4th, was reportedly suffering from depression for some time, according to his family. Thorpe died after being struck by a train at Esher railway station in Surrey.
Graham Thorpe had a remarkable cricketing career and was particularly admired in Sri Lanka for his support after the 2004 tsunami. He played a key role in establishing the Surrey Village Cricket Ground in Maggona, Sri Lanka, and a road in the village was named Graham Thorpe Road in honor of his commitment.

Amanda Thorpe, Graham’s wife, revealed that the 55-year-old had been struggling with depression and anxiety. Thorpe was a crucial member of the England cricket team, playing for 12 years between 1993 and 2005. After retiring, he continued his involvement in cricket as a coach, first in Australia and later with Surrey and England.
In 2022, Thorpe was hospitalized due to a serious illness. After his passing, Amanda revealed that he had attempted suicide two years earlier. She shared that despite showing occasional glimpses of his former self, Graham continued to suffer from severe depression and anxiety. The family tried many treatments, but none were effective.
“Graham was known for being mentally strong on the field and was in good physical health. But mental illness is a real disease and can affect anyone,” Amanda told the media.
