GMOA Urges Understanding from Health Trade Unions on Salary Increase Discrepancy

GMOA has called on other trade unions in the health sector to exhibit understanding regarding the recent salary increase, which saw doctors receiving a 10 percent raise compared to other government employees.

Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, the media spokesperson for the GMOA, highlighted that although there was a proposal to increase the salary of all government employees by 20,000 rupees, only 50 percent, or 10,000 rupees, was granted, while doctors received a 10 percent increase in allowances.

Emphasizing the importance of unity within the health service, Dr. Wijesinghe noted that the health sector operates as a team led by specialists and doctors. He stressed that the various layers in the health sector, determined by factors such as responsibility, accountability, education level, nature of work, and risk, influence the allowances and salaries for each layer.

Dr. Wijesinghe warned about the potential consequences if the leadership of the health system is compromised, emphasizing that the system cannot afford to lose its leadership. He highlighted that the doctors’ allowances were the result of a gradual process, not an overnight achievement.

Expressing concerns about the current situation, Dr. Wijesinghe stated that the GMOA had informed relevant parties about the precarious conditions for the past year. The association has submitted a resolution proposal outlining steps to address the issues.

Dr. Wijesinghe further noted that the GMOA had actively pursued its demands through consultations and, where necessary, through public demonstrations. However, he expressed disappointment that other health groups did not similarly advocate for their stipends.
