The Special Executive Committee of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has decided this evening (11) that if the suspect responsible for raping a female doctor at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital is not arrested by tomorrow (12) morning, the ongoing strike—currently limited to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital—will be extended to all hospitals in the North Central Province.
GMOA media spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe stated that if the suspect remains at large by tomorrow evening (12), the strike will be expanded island-wide.
The association also stressed that the victim’s family has requested media outlets to respect her privacy and avoid disclosing any information that could reveal her identity.
Meanwhile, Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has issued a special statement urging all print and electronic media to refrain from revealing the doctor’s identity. He assured the GMOA that all necessary measures would be taken to arrest the perpetrator and bring him to justice.
Additionally, the Association of Medical Specialists has pledged its full support to ensure the suspect’s arrest and legal proceedings.
