The challenges faced by Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry were deliberated in a recent meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainable Development. Chaired by Hon. Ajith Mannapperuma, the committee gathered industry representatives to discuss pressing issues.

During the meeting, the importance of a national policy for the sector was highlighted, and a proposal was presented. Hon. Ajith Mannapperuma instructed the development of a consensus-based national policy.

Hon. Sajith Premadasa categorized the problems, emphasizing the need for a report to address them. Issues such as gem mining permits, the impact of gold import bans, and taxes on the industry were discussed.

The committee emphasized streamlining the permit process and proposed using foreign exchange from industry businesses to import gold. The Ministry of Finance will address taxation concerns.
