Ganemulla Sanjeewa, a known underworld figure, was shot dead in a gun attack at the Colombo Hulftsdorp Court complex earlier today.
According to reports, the assailant, disguised as a lawyer, carried out the targeted shooting. Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne alias Ganemulla Sanjeewa sustained critical injuries and later succumbed at the National hospital.
The Gampaha Magistrate’s Court ordered on January 10 that the suspected drug trafficker and organized criminal who was under Detention Orders (DOs), be transferred to Boossa Prison.
Accordingly, he was ordered to be detained at Boossa Prison until June 24. Today, he was brought to court from Boossa for a case. He was previously arrested on September 13, 2023, at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake upon his return from Nepal. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of a forged passport bearing the details of a woman believed to be from Dematagoda.
Investigations revealed that Sanjeewa had illegally traveled to India by boat before fleeing to Nepal. He returned to Sri Lanka following the issuance of an international Red Warrant for his arrest.
