Arrest in Puttalam

The Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Mohammed Asman Sherifdeen, the main suspect in the killing of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa. The arrest took place in the Palaviya area of Puttalam. Sherifdeen, 34 years old, was wanted for the murder, which happened inside a courtroom in Colombo.

Reports say that the gun used in the murder was not brought in by the suspect himself. Instead, a female accomplice smuggled the weapon inside a book. She entered the court pretending to be a lawyer. Both suspects disguised themselves as legal professionals. However, the woman is still missing, and police are searching for her.

Suspect Linked to Other MurdersDuring a press briefing, Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that the suspect is also linked to a double murder in Mount Lavinia on February 7. This shows his deep connection to organized crime.

Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s Courtroom Assassination

Ganemulla Sanjeewa, whose full name was Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, was shot and killed inside Court No. 5 at Hulftsdorp on February 19. The attack was carefully planned, with the suspects dressed as legal professionals. Sanjeewa was under heavy security when he was brought to court, but the gunmen still managed to carry out the murder.

Crackdown on Suspects

Police are working hard to arrest all those involved. Authorities have alerted airports to stop the suspects from leaving the country. Five special police teams have been deployed to track down the female accomplice and others who may have been involved.

Sanjeewa’s Criminal Background

Sanjeewa had a long history of crime, including charges of murder, robbery, extortion, and illegal possession of firearms. He was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in September 2023 after returning from Nepal with a forged passport. Authorities say he had previously entered India illegally by boat and later fled to Nepal. His high-profile criminal activities made him a target for rival gangs and police crackdowns.

Security Concerns at Court

The murder raises concerns about security at the Colombo Hulftsdorp Court complex. Despite heavy police presence, the suspects were able to bring a gun into the courtroom and carry out the assassination. Investigations are ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future.
