A four-month-old baby has died at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Children’s Hospital in Peradeniya due to Covid 19.

The baby named Amodya Sandeepa Karunasinghe, a resident of Nugawela, Kandy had died of Covid according to the coroner of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital Amal Jayawardena.

After being administered the vaccine given to four-month-old infants the child had later got breathing difficulties and developed a fever. The mother had taken steps to take the child to a private medical centre on the morning of February 13 for treatment.

The baby was admitted to the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Hospital in Peradeniya that afternoon as his condition did not improve. There, the child was given an antigen test which had come out negative for Covid.

The coroner Amal Jayawardena said that a PCR examination had been carried out which tested positive and that the child had died that night due to an exacerbation of the disease.

The coroner said the boy’s father, who works in Italy, had gone abroad a few months before the baby was born and that the father had not seen the baby following his birth.

The Central Provincial Health Services Office says that 38 deaths have been reported in the Kandy District so far.
