The Colombo Crime Division has arrested a former musician, the prime suspect in the extortion case involving a 15 lakh rupees ransom from Janaka Ratnayake, the former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission.
The suspect, associated with the Purple Range band, occasionally performed one or two songs with the band’s permission during shows in different regions, despite misrepresenting himself as a full-fledged musician.
Janaka Ratnayake filed a complaint at the Kirulapana Police Station on October 16. The Colombo Crime Division apprehended the main suspect near the Wellampitiya Junction Post Office on the morning of the 11th.
Upon arrest, the authorities seized 12,240 milligrams of drugs from the 42-year-old suspect, a resident of Matara Sultana Goda. The suspect’s mobile phone is now in police custody as the Colombo Crime Division continues its investigation into the extortion case.
