The Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority has announced that flights at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake are scheduled to operate as normal today (24), despite ongoing concerns over regional tensions.
While some delays may occur, all scheduled flights are expected to operate, the Authority stated.
According to foreign media reports, Middle Eastern airspace that was temporarily closed has now been reopened, including Qatari airspace.
The closures were prompted by Iran’s missile attacks on a U.S. military base in Qatar and another in Iraq yesterday (23). Following the attacks, several Middle Eastern countries closed their airspace, leading to flight cancellations and diversions.
As a result, five aircraft flying from Sri Lanka to Middle Eastern destinations were diverted to alternative airports. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, SriLankan Airlines flights were rerouted to Muscat, Dubai, and Riyadh.
Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that its airspace has since been reopened. The Qatari government added that the security situation in the country has now returned to normal.
Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates have also reopened their airspace.
