The first 100 days of a presidency are crucial, as they offer a glimpse into the direction of the new leadership. Overall, Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) remains a popular leader, loved by many, and has demonstrated his ability to lead his party to a landslide victory, emerging as a strong political figure.
Has He Delivered on His Promises?
In an interview with the BBC, AKD stated that within the first 100 days, he would establish authority and work to form a parliament that would represent the people’s mandate. He has indeed delivered on these promises. Despite losing his speaker within a few weeks, he continues to lead a strong government.
He also pledged to strengthen the rule of law, implement certain unfulfilled court orders, and create a safety net for the poor. Progress has been made in these areas, and results are gradually becoming visible.
As soon as he assumed office, AKD appointed two senior investigators who had been sidelined by the previous government to look into the Easter bombing case. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has expressed satisfaction with the investigations, although information regarding their progress has not been made public.
Former Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, popularly known as Pillayan, was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department and questioned regarding revelations made in a Channel 4 documentary on the Easter bombing. Additionally, several individuals who had been evading taxes have quickly paid up following the imprisonment of company director Arjun Aloysius for tax evasion. Furthermore, the license of Mendis Distilleries was suspended.
Economic Progress
On the economic front, the Sri Lankan rupee has appreciated against the US dollar, and a 40% increase has been recorded in the stock market. Inflation has also decreased. AKD’s diplomatic efforts were well-received in India, and his foreign relations have largely proceeded smoothly.
However, the government is grappling with significant economic challenges. AKD himself had to step in to address the ongoing rice shortage, a problem that has yet to be fully resolved. Nonetheless, AKD has managed to appoint new leaders to key positions, including the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief Justice, the Army Commander, and the Navy Commander.
Anti-Corruption Initiatives
The “Clean Sri Lanka” program, which aims to eliminate corruption, has sparked hope among many and has made notable progress with widespread support. While some predicted that AKD’s presidency would bring about radical change, including shocking reforms, he seems to have opted for a more gradual approach—taking things one step at a time. For many voters, this slow pace is too cautious, but there are others who appreciate the measured pace of change.
Challenges Ahead
Undoubtedly, AKD will face numerous critical challenges on the social front as he continues his efforts to bridge ethnic divides in an inclusive manner. Eliminating corruption and dismantling certain structures of power will not be easy. Established power centers will not relinquish control without resistance. AKD’s team, while dedicated, still lacks experience in certain areas, and this is becoming apparent.
AKD has consolidated his power with the support of the common people, but he now faces the task of navigating the complex dynamics of the political elite. These powerbrokers may attempt to exploit any emerging problems in the days to come.
