One female employee of the Pilimatalawa Diamond Plastic Company’s has died due to collapse of the elevator and another has been admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital with serious injuries.
The deceased has been identified as 26 year old Ayesha Jayamali Kularatne, a resident of Balana area. Hospital sources said that the spinal cord of the girl who was seriously injured has been severely damaged and her life is in serious danger.
The Diamond Plastic Manufacturing Company is located in a three-storey building at No. 400, Colombo Road, Pilimatalawa where the accident took place. It is reported that the production of polythene bags has been going on for some time.
The company employs more than 400 people. It is said that the two workers who were involved in the accident were working in the manufacturing department.
The parts of the elevator have been handed over to the Analyst and police investigations are underway, said Kandy SSP Chamil Ratnayake.
