Father Jeewantha Pieris appears at the courts and granted bail

Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the release on bail of Father Jeevantha Peiris, who appeared at the Fort Magistrate’s Court with his lawyer at around 12 noon today.

The court banned him from traveling abroad and set a bail condition that he should go to the Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit tomorrow (13) and give a statement.

The Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit had reported to the court that Father Jeevantha Peiris was named as a suspect in the investigation related to the incident of entering the President’s Secretariat on July 09 by being a member of an illegal crowd.
Attorney-at-law Udara Muhandiramge appearing on behalf of Fr. Jeewantha Peiris has already filed two motions before Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court in respect of two cases. Both Fort Police and Slave Island Police have filed two separate B reports against Fr. Jeewantha Peiris over two incidents relating to the Galle Face protests.

Fr. Jeewantha Peiris has also filed a Fundamental Rights petition in Supreme Court seeking an order preventing police and tri-forces from arresting him regarding Galle Face protest incidents.

 

A panel of lawyers led by President’s Attorney Rienzi Arsakularatne appeared before Father Venuena’s court.
