The Omicron variant of Covid 19 virus has spread exponentially in Sri Lanka now which was at 12 to 24 percent weeks ago, said Dr. Ranjith Batuwantuda, Director Specialist, Health Promotion Bureau.
The director points out that the omicron virus is currently spreading like an pandemic in the West and that the hospital system in those countries has become too tolerant.
“If the Omicron virus spreads rapidly in our country, our hospital system will not be able to tolerate it, which could create a very dangerous situation in the country again,” he said.
He urges the public to take immediate action to ensure that all people over the age of 20 who have completed the vaccination receive the booster vaccine to avoid further complications.
Booster vaccination is given at all medical officer’s offices during this long weekend with four holidays , so he or she should go to the nearest vaccination center and get the vaccine.
It also states that genetic testing for the omicron virus is carried out only by people who come here from abroad and their associates.
