Vavuniya’s security forces initiated excavation operations yesterday (12) in response to information indicating the burial of weapons and gold by former LTTE members. The search focused on three locations in the Poovarasankulam and Aluthkovilkulam regions of Vavuniya.
The intelligence was provided by a former LTTE member, stating that the LTTE maintained camps in these locations during the conflict. When the LTTE members vacated these camps and relocated to different areas, they concealed their weaponry and gold in these specific spots.
The Poovarasankulam Police obtained a court order for the excavation work at these sites and submitted a report to the Vavuniya Magistrate, Wasim Ahmed.
The Magistrate visited the locations, where archaeology officials, government authorities, and security personnel were actively involved in the excavation process. The operation employed two backhoes, and rigorous security measures were enforced in the area.
