A special EU delegation is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka tomorrow (27) to review the continuation of the GSP + trade concession granted by Europe for Sri Lankan exports. According to EU sources, the delegation will remain in Sri Lanka until the 5th of next month to review Sri Lanka’s implementation of 27 international conventions on human rights, labor rights, environmental protection, and good governance.
Normally every two years, the EU exchanges information talks and visits GSP + countries, and the delegation visits Sri Lanka in accordance with that process. Last June, a resolution was tabled in the European Parliament against Sri Lanka to suspend the concession, accusing it of using the Prevention of Terrorism Act in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s current GSP + tax concession is set to lapse in 2023.
