The Election Commission has announced that it will set a date for the local government election as soon as possible.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today, Election Commission Director General Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that, following the Supreme Court’s decision, the challenges related to holding the local government election will be addressed quickly, and the election will be scheduled at the earliest possible date.
According to the court’s order, the local government election should be held right after the presidential election, and the commission is responsible for organizing it.
“Today, we discussed the local government election within the Election Commission. As directed by the Supreme Court, we have been instructed to conduct the local government election as soon as possible while considering the completion of other legally required elections,” said Ratnayake.
He also mentioned that the commission discussed how to handle this matter carefully.
“As a result, the local government elections will be scheduled as soon as possible in a way that does not conflict with other elections. A date will be announced soon,” he added.
The director general also noted that a specific date for the election has not yet been determined, but the commission will treat the local government election as the next priority based on the court’s decision.
