The proposed extension of services of Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe as the Governor of the CBSL hangs in the balance due to the delay in Prime Minister’s endorsement.

The President must obtain the Finance Minister’s endorsement to confirm the extension.

In this matter of concern, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the Finance Minister.

Sources at the Presidential Secretariat confirmed they were awaiting the recommendation of the Prime Minister in this connection.

The term of Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank, expires on June 30

Nandalal Weerasinghe became the Governor of the CBSL under the aegis of the President during Basil Rajapaksa’s period as the Finance Minister.

, Dinesh Weerakkody was nominated for the coveted post of Governor of the Central Bank by the new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe after he assumed office.

The nomination of Dinesh Weerakkody for the post has sparked a crisis between the President and the Prime Minister.

In this situation, Nandalal Weerasinghe has, however, stated that he would continue to hold the post.

Meanwhile, sources from the Presidential Secretariat further stated that Nandalal Weerasinghe had not received the recommendation of the Prime Minister for the next term until yesterday (21).
