All political party leaders are dragging their feet and steering themselves clear of the 21st amendment to make it unworkable and impracticable.
The necessity to bring political stability before economic stability has gone to the back burner. It is evident through the behaviour of political parties. Political analysts point out.
The United National Party has also taken a similar stance to that of the SLPP that the queues would not disappear with political stability.
Political circles are now buzzing with the news of the latest stance taken by the UNPin this regard.
The head of the drafting committee, Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe, has pointed out that he has done his best to get it passed by Parliament without a referendum. Nevertheless, the SJB, TNA and the NPF had indicated they would not support the amendment without considering the proposal forwarded by them.
Meanwhile, Basil Rajapaksa and two other ministers have launched a campaign with the SLPP to defeat the 21st amendment. They are poised to ask for a secret ballot and see that the amendment doesn’t go through Parliament.
