Authorities in Anuradhapura have urged Buddhists from other regions not to travel to the city for tomorrow’s (04) Unduvap Full Moon Poya observances due to the severe weather conditions impacting the country.
The appeal was made by the Chief Prelate of the Atamasthana, the Most Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, during a media briefing held in Anuradhapura. He noted that the decision was taken out of concern for the safety and wellbeing of devotees.
Unduvap Poya is a deeply significant day for Buddhists, especially in Anuradhapura, where thousands traditionally gather near the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi to mark the arrival of Arahant Theri Sanghamitta and the planting of the sacred Bodhi sapling.
“In view of the present situation in the country, I kindly advise devotees travelling from far away to avoid making the journey for this month’s Poya observances. This is offered out of compassion and mindful consideration,” Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Thero said.
He added that all rituals and religious activities will proceed as scheduled, with blessings and merit dedicated to those affected by the adverse weather, including the victims who lost their lives.
