A thirty-two-year-old detainee who was incarcerated in Galle prison has passed away today (20) after being admitted to Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital due to breathing difficulties.
The detainee, held under snumber 2840, was taken to the hospital by prison officials due to respiratory issues. Despite receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Karapitiya Hospital, he unfortunately passed away.
The deceased had been remanded after facing charges related to heroin possession. He had been in Galle prison since 2nd of August.
A post-mortem examination was planned to be conducted at Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital to determine the cause of death.
