Delhi University (DU) is preparing to honour Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya with an honorary doctorate during her visit to India in mid-October, official documents reveal.
According to a notice issued on September 8, DU’s Registrar has convened a meeting of the Academic Council this week to consider a request from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to hold a special convocation in collaboration with Hindu College.
The ceremony, proposed for October 17–18, will recognise Dr. Amarasuriya’s academic journey, which began at Hindu College where she studied sociology from 1991 to 1994 on an MEA-sponsored scholarship.
Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava confirmed that both the college and DU have received formal communication about the event, noting that preparations are underway for the special convocation.
The Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo has already endorsed the plan, while the MEA has sought a detailed brief from the university regarding the programme.
If approved, the event will mark a significant moment of academic and diplomatic recognition, celebrating Dr. Amarasuriya’s longstanding ties with Delhi University.
