The Kandy Police has obtained a court order to prevent an event to be held in Kandy today, consisted with awards presentation to the family members of a LTTE terrorist suspects who are in jail on charges of bombing the Temple of the Tooth and sacred Jayasri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura.
It was organized by an NGO , Human Rights Center of Kandy as a celebration to mark Human Rights Day.
The court order was obtained based on information received by the police regarding the agenda of the event and the public unrest.
It is said that the event was organized by the Father Nandana Manatunga of the NGO at the Human Rights Center in Kundasale under the theme ‘Let’s treat prisoners humanely’.
It is reported that the organizer have included an item to present awards to the family members of LTTE members who are currently in jail with the charges of attacks o Sri Dalanda Maligawa and Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. Also there have been arrangements to felicitate LTTE cadre who was in jail with the charges of assassination attempt of former President Maithreepala Sirisena and recently given presidential pardon.
It is said that the wife of the missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda was also to be facilitated.
While all arrangements have been made to hold the event at the Kandyan Art Residences Hotel in Mulgampola, Kandy, the police have obtained a court order against the hotel management and organizers.
