The Court of Appeal today (March 17) rejected a writ petition filed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who sought an interim injunction to prevent his arrest. The petition was related to an order issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court concerning the 2023 shooting incident at the W15 Hotel in Weligama, Matara.
The Matara Magistrate’s Court had previously ordered the arrest of IGP Tennakoon in connection with the case. However, Tennakoon had filed a writ petition requesting the Court of Appeal to prevent the execution of this order.
With today’s ruling, the court has rejected his request, clearing the way for authorities to proceed with the arrest as per the magistrate’s directive.
The 2023 Weligama shooting incident, which took place at the W15 Hotel, has been under investigation, and several individuals have already faced legal action. The case has drawn significant public attention, especially due to the involvement of the country’s top police officer.
Authorities are now expected to take the next legal steps following the Court of Appeal’s decision.
