The Castle Street Hospital witnessed a medical marvel last Sunday (15), as Isuru Perera and his wife, residents of Veyangoda, became parents to six premature twins.

Isuru and his wife decided to pursue artificial insemination after facing 12 childless years of marriage. Their shared consent led them to an artificial birth procedure, which astonishingly resulted in the conception of not just one or two embryos but five. With each passing day, the embryos grew steadily in the mother’s womb, reaching the 26-week mark, at which point a small operation was planned.

However, during the scheduled operation at 26 weeks, the medical team was in for a surprise. Symptoms of childbirth appeared, and an emergency caesarean section became necessary. Initially, doctors believed there were five children, but it was only during the procedure that they uncovered that six children had been born.

The six infants, born prematurely at 26 weeks, were with the weights ranging between 400-700 grams. The low birth weight posed significant challenges, and the newborns were promptly admitted to the neonatal unit.

Dr. Ajith Dantanarayana, the hospital director, shared their critical condition and the dedication of the medical staff to ensure their survival. Fortunately, the mother, who also required intensive care, has shown signs of recovery and has been moved to the general ward.

Pediatrician Dr. Saman Kumara, responsible for the care of premature babies, emphasized the immense challenge ahead. The newborns’ birth weight and premature birth made it a daunting task to secure their survival, and he urged everyone to celebrate when the children can safely go home.

Dr. Danta Narayana, the hospital director, highlighted the necessity for the mother and the six children to remain in the hospital for an extended period.

Isuru Perera, the father of these six babies, works for a private company and currently resides in a rented house. He expressed his commitment to raising his children, regardless of the financial burden, and appealed to society for assistance.

With each baby needing approximately 2 kilograms of powdered milk daily, financial support is crucial for the family’s well-being during their extended stay at the hospital.

Those willing to extend a helping hand can contact the hospital directly or reach Isuru Perera at 0702218048 for more details.
