The criminal convicted of the heinous rape and murder of Sivaloganathan Vidya in Jaffna, a crime that shook the nation, has passed away while serving a life sentence at Pallekele Dumbara Prison. The deceased, identified as 41-year-old Poobalasingham Thavakumar, a resident of Punkuduthiv Kites, Jaffna, had filed an appeal regarding his death sentence.

According to police reports, Thavakumar had been admitted to the prison hospital and subsequently transferred to Kandy National Hospital for treatment following a stroke he suffered after his death sentence was imposed. Tragically, he succumbed to his illness.

The body of Thavakumar has been placed at the Kandy National Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. His death comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings related to the 2015 murder case of Vidya.

In 2017, seven criminals, including Swiss Kumar, were sentenced to death by a unanimous decision of Jaffna High Court Judge Manikavasagar Ilanchelian, Trincomalee High Court Judge Annalingam Premshankar, and Vavuniya High Court Judge Balendran Shashimahendran. The sentencing was related to the brutal murder of Vidya, which occurred on May 13th, 2015.
