Colombo Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Uditha Liyanage has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a treasure-hunting case involving his wife.

Earlier, the Anuradhapura Police arrested eight individuals, including the DIG’s wife, who were allegedly digging for treasure on land near a temple in the Thibirikadawala area of Sravastipura. The arrests were made on August 13 following information received about illegal excavation near the Ratrang Devalaya.

It was also reported that DIG Liyanage attempted to pressure the police officers who carried out the raid, urging them over the phone to release the suspects. To investigate these claims, Anuradhapura Acting Magistrate Chandana Weerakoon previously ordered all telephone companies to provide the police with analysis reports related to the suspects’ phone numbers.

Based on this evidence, DIG Liyanage was taken into custody, sources confirmed.
