The Constitutional Council today (12) approved President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recommendation to appoint Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya as the 37th IGP of Sri Lanka.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne at the Parliament Complex.
The appointment follows the removal of 36th IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon by Parliament last week, after a motion was passed citing multiple allegations and misconduct in the performance of his duties.
Weerasuriya, who had been serving as Acting IGP, will now formally take charge as the head of the Sri Lanka Police.
