A 36-year-old Canadian woman has been arrested at Katunayake Airport with a consignment of hashish valued at approximately Rs. 360 million.
According to sources, the woman was apprehended by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Division upon her arrival in the country last night. She had traveled from Toronto to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates before reaching Sri Lanka. The arrest was made following a tip-off received by Customs authorities.
Investigations reveal that the woman is a severe drug addict. A total of 36 kilograms and 500 grams of hashish were discovered hidden inside several bed sheets packed in two suitcases she had brought.
Customs officials suspect that the consignment was intended to be re-exported to another country. The Customs Narcotics Control Division has stated that the woman, along with the seized drugs, will be handed over to the Katunayake Airport Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation.
