The driver of the bus involved in the Welikanda accident on the Polonnaruwa-Welikanda-Sinhapura main road has been remanded by the Polonnaruwa Magistrate. Samantha Kumara, aged 32, residing at No. 359 Nava Mahasenpura, Polonnaruwa Welikanda, was produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court today (01).
The accident occurred when the bus, carrying employees from a private rice mill in Sinhapura, veered off the road due to careless driving and excessive speed. The Welikanda Police arrested the driver after the incident.
A total of 36 women and four men were injured in the accident and transported to the hospital. Four individuals with severe injuries were transferred from Velikanda Regional Hospital to Polonnaruwa Maharohala, where they are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing under the guidance of Polonnaruwa Senior Superintendent of Police Nishan de Silva. The police team, led by Welikanda Acting Police Station Inspector Pradeep Seneviratne, is conducting further investigations based on the instructions of Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudath Asmadala, in charge of the Welikanda area.
