A SLTB bus from the Nuwara Eliya depot traveling from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya was involved in a serious accident near Watawala Sinhala Viduhala on the Hatton main road in Colombo today (01) morning. The bus veered off the road and rolled down a 10-foot cliff while attempting to give way to an oncoming bus from the opposite direction.
This accident took place at around 4.30 am, according to the Watawala Police.
The accident resulted in injuries to about 15 passengers, who were rushed to the Watawala Regional Hospital for treatment. Among the injured, five individuals in critical condition were later transferred to Nawalapitiya District General Hospital for further medical attention. Fortunately, the condition of the other injured individuals is not considered serious.
It was reported that around 100 people were on board the bus at the time of the accident. Following the collision, the driver of the bus was attacked by some of the passengers, and he too is receiving medical treatment at the Watawala regional hospital.
The Langama bus involved in the accident sustained severe damage as a result of the collision. Local authorities are conducting investigations into the incident to determine the exact cause of the accident and to assess the extent of the damage.
