Foreign media reports have shed light on the harrowing moments preceding the collision of a cargo ship with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Audio tapes recovered from workers on the bridge captured desperate efforts to warn of the impending danger, including calls to halt traffic and evacuate the crew before disaster struck.

The incident involved the Singapore-flagged Daly, a colossal container ship the length of three football fields, which was reported to be out of control before crashing into the bridge. Despite efforts to slow down the vessel and stop traffic, the collision resulted in the closure of the busiest port on the US East Coast, the port of Baltimore.

Insurance claims stemming from the accident are expected to reach record levels, potentially costing billions of dollars. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is actively investigating the incident, recovering the ship’s data recorder and planning interviews with crew members and responders.

The aftermath of the collision has prompted a comprehensive examination of the bridge’s remains to determine the cause and prevent future accidents. Tragically, six individuals, including immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, were involved in the incident while repairing road potholes.

Efforts are underway to restore normalcy, with the US Coast Guard prioritizing the reopening of the waterway for shipping and the safe removal of the wrecked ship. Despite initial concerns about hazardous materials on board, authorities have assured the public of no immediate threat.

The impact of the port closure on Baltimore’s economy and regional traffic patterns is significant, with disruptions to daily commutes and supply chains. However, experts believe that alternative shipping hubs on the Eastern Seaboard will mitigate the crisis and prevent substantial price increases in commodities.
