An audit report released by the National Audit Office has revealed that 46 electricity connections provided to the official residences of former Members of Parliament have accumulated outstanding electricity bills amounting to Rs. 11.66 million.
According to the report, these arrears have remained unpaid for over a year, while Rs. 5.29 million of the total amount has been outstanding for more than five years. Due to the prolonged non-payment of Rs. 12.21 million, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) classified these 46 connections as terminated (dormant) debtors in 2023.
The audit has recommended that immediate action be taken to expedite the recovery of these arrears from the official residences of former parliamentary representatives. Responding to the audit, the CEB stated that continuous efforts are being made to recover the outstanding amounts.
This information was disclosed in the 2023 audit report on the Ceylon Electricity Board.
