Nearly 100 men have donated sperm to the newly established sperm bank at Castle Street Women’s Hospital, which was launched on December 7th, according to the hospital’s Director, Dr. Ajith Dantanarayana.
The sperm bank has the capacity to accommodate up to 1,000 donors. Therefore, Dr. Dantanarayana is appealing to more men to come forward and contribute.
This initiative aims to support men who are unable to have children due to infertility. Through this program, healthy donor sperm is implanted into the wife’s womb, enabling the couple to conceive a child.
Dr. Dantanarayana highlighted that approximately 90% of the women who have already participated in the program have experienced successful results. A unique feature of this service is the complete anonymity between the donor and the recipient couple. Neither the donor knows the identity of the couple, nor does the couple know the identity of the donor.
The director assured the public that the entire process is carried out with the utmost confidentiality, ensuring that no one has any reason for suspicion or concern.
He further stated that while the cost of this procedure in the private sector is around Rs. 2 million, it is offered completely free of charge at Castle Street Women’s Hospital.
