Indian Navy’s submarine INS Shalki arrived today (02) in Colombo for a two-day visit. The submarine was ceremonially received by the Officer of the Guard of the Sri Lanka Navy.
The Commanding Officer of INS Shalki is scheduled to call on Rear Admiral WDCU Kumarasinghe, Commander of the Western Naval Area, at the Western Naval Headquarters on August 2, 2024. Later in the day, around 50 personnel from the Sri Lanka Navy will visit the submarine and receive a briefing onboard. Personnel from the High Commission of India and the Sri Lanka Defence Forces will also visit INS Shalki.
INS Shalki, a Shishumar-class diesel-electric submarine, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on February 7, 1992. It is the first submarine built in India. Previously, the Kalveri-class submarine INS Karaj visited Colombo in February 2024, and INS Vagir visited Colombo in June 2023 for the International Day of Yoga.
The visit is an Operational Turnaround (OTR), during which the submarine will replenish fuel and provisions. The crew will have the opportunity to recuperate and visit places of interest in Sri Lanka. INS Shalki will depart the island on August 4.
