A fishing boat believed to be from India was found abandoned on the beach in the South bar area in Mannar by the police yesterday (13th).
The Mannar Police stated that the boat did not have a registration number or anything else on it and that it was only mentioned as ‘Archana’ in one place.
Representatives of the Mannar Fisheries Society have stated that the boat does not belong to Sri Lankan fishermen as they are familiar with boats available in the area. However, these fishermen in Mannar have not seen anyone from the abandoned boat.
Police suspect that the people who abandoned the boat had erased the registration numbers and other details so that they could not identify the boat, which may have been due to the smuggling of some illegal goods from India to Mannar. Mannar Police is conducting investigations.
