One of the two African giraffes, the female giraffe died at the Dehiwala Zoo yesterday (07) while receiving treatment for a diseased hoof in one of her front legs. She was born in 1993 to an African giraffe couple in Sri Lanka, passed away at the age of 30.
Allegations have been raised by the Sri Lanka Public Zoo Department Employees’ Association in Dehiwala, suggesting that the death may be linked to a mistake made during the injection administered by the zoo’s veterinarians. The circumstances surrounding the death are now under investigation.
Dehiwala Zoo authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry to determine the cause of her untimely death.
