The hospital branch of the GMOA announced the temporary suspension of a symbolic strike scheduled to commence today (14). The decision comes in response to the misuse of hospital resources by the chief administrative officer at the Colombo National Eye Hospital.
The union clarified that the strike suspension is contingent on ongoing discussions initiated by the health secretary with hospital doctors. If a fair resolution is not reached through the discussions, the strike may resume.

Allegations against the chief administrative officer include various illegal activities, such as the inappropriate use of hospital resources, including ambulances, and the assignment of specific contract forces in hospital construction projects. The association claims to have made multiple requests to the director general of health services, asserting that these requests remain unfulfilled. Furthermore, concerns are raised about the suppression of investigations due to the officer’s connection with the director general of health services.
The association also highlights the alleged involvement of a Deputy Director General of Health Services in suppressing the investigation. In light of these issues, the association is urging a temporary transfer of the chief administrative officer from the eye hospital to another location until an independent investigation is conducted.
