There is a greater probability that a civilian woman will be considered for appointment as police chief.

A reliable source revealed to Lankasara that there has been a discussion among the higher echelons of the government regarding the appointment of a woman Inspector General of Police for the first time in the history of the Sri Lanka Police. It is said that the name of a senior woman officer who has held key positions in the legal and judicial sectors of this country has been proposed.

After the announcement of the retirement of the current Inspector General of Police, CD Wickramaratne, there has been a huge competition within the police for the post of Inspector General of Police.

However, as revealed to Lankasara, it is stated that this senior female officer has not yet expressed her willingness to accept this position. Civilian officers have been appointed as IGPs in the police department before, and if she is appointed, she will go down in history as the first female IGP to be appointed to preside over the police.
