A controversy is brewing over the position of the Prime Minister within government quarters.

While one faction is supportive of the current Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardene, the others believe that ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa should be made Prime Minister.

Several members of the Rajapaksa family, led by Basil Rajapaksa, are adamant that the current Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, should be in that position, and another group led by Johnston Fernando has suggested that Gotabaya Rajapaksa should be the Prime Minister, according to reliable sources.

However, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is yet to decide whether to take over the post of Prime Minister or not.

Besides, a group of moderate MPs of the SLPP have decided to meet Gotabaya Rajapaksa soon and convince him to make a statement about whether he was planning to return to politics..
