A special exhibition of the sacred Tooth Relic of Sri Dalanda Maligawa, Kandy, will be held from April 18th to 28th after 16 years. This decision comes following a request by President Anur Kumara Dissanayake, who met with the chief prelates of Malwatta and Asgiriya today. The prelates agreed to the President’s request, sources said.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met with the chief prelates today (the 23rd) and, after a lengthy discussion, the Mahanayakas consented to the request. No exhibition of the Tooth Relic has been held in 16 years, with the last special exhibition taking place on March 6, 2009.
Previously, on December 17, 2022, coinciding with the 75th Independence Day, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, under the Ranil Wickremesinghe government, had requested permission from the Mahanayakas for a Dalada exhibition. However, the request was rejected due to strong opposition from a majority within the Malwatte-Asgiri Karaka Sangha Sabha.
